eBay is about to acquire TGCplayer for $295 million

eBay announced the acquisition of TCGplayer, an online marketplace for trading card goods. The deal is estimated at $295 million worth, the enterprise said on Monday. Buying process is likely to close officially in the first quarter of 2023. The transaction marks eBay's incorporation into the emerging card game market.

Established in 2008, hobby stores of TCGplayer have evolved into a huge business, providing over 600 jobs.

"eBay, building on our decades trading experience, continues to set forward local companies and large retailers by extending its online platform," stated eBay vice president, Dawn Block. “Our marketplace has always boosted client’s enthusiasm in this regard and contributed to establishing links between all parties involved. Cooperation with TGCplayer facilitates delivering a more positive customer experience.”

The CEO of TGCplayer Chedi Hampson also highlighted the deal’s benefits, pointing to eBay's best practices and unlimited resources. Following the acquisition, the platform proceeds to operate independently, with Hampson as the Chief Officer. Concurrently, its headquarters remains unchanged, located in the heart of Italian Syracuse.

“Supported by eBay, we will promote our mission and expand our service range. Thus, by sharing customer experience, TGCplayer intends to provide the best online commodities for exciting pastimes and valuable collections,” added the marketplace CEO in a press release.

eBay has always been a destination for trading card lovers to purchase and sell. Recently, the corporation has been actively working to strengthen its market position. eBay introduced a two-factor authentication system for trading cards valued over $750 due to their strong demand as of January. The company reported this category to have greater coverage than the rest. Therefore, in the first quarter of 2021, trading card transactions were estimated at $2 billion worth.
