Sell USDJPY down to 152.00

USDJPY took a sharp dive in early September, and it is now trading around 157.10. What's behind the yen's sudden strength? A massive shift in expectations for a Bank of Japan (BoJ) interest rate hike. Board member Hajime Takata lit a fire under the market when he called for faster monetary tightening, citing persistent inflationary pressures. His words didn't go unnoticed—investors are now pricing in a rate hike on September 18 as all but certain. A more aggressive BoJ would shrink the yield gap with the United States, which has been the Asian currency's biggest weakness for ages.

However, it's not just the Japanese regulator in focus. At the same time, traders are bracing for the Federal Reserve's (Fed) September 16 meeting. After Kevin Warsh's hawkish performance at Jackson Hole, the odds of a 25‑basis‑point increase are hovering around 60%–65%. Such a scenario would lend a helping hand to the dollar and potentially put a brake on the USDJPY's slide. But make no mistake—everything depends on the upcoming jobs and inflation data. A soft print could pour cold water on September monetary tightening hopes and pile even more strain on the greenback.

And there is one more wildcard in play. Tokyo's unmistakable willingness to step into the Forex market provides another layer of support for the yen. From July 30 to August 26, Japanese officials spent a record 15.4 trillion yen to defend their currency. They even coordinated with the United States, which gave its public blessing to the efforts. The message is clear: any push back toward the 160–164 zone could trigger new intervention, effectively capping the pair's upside.

The ultimate recommendation is to sell USDJPY at the current price (157.10), targeting 152.00 within four weeks. To shield your position from adverse market movements, place a Stop Loss order at 160.30.
