Amazon shared plans to buy several thousand electric lorries and cargo bikes for its delivery chains in Europe. It will require an investment of 1 billion euros ($972.1 million).
Retail giant from Seattle announced its plan to raise the number of electric vans owned by the company in Europe on its Web site. The investment will help to increase the number of vehicles from about 3,000 to 10,000 by 2025 through this investment.
The United Kingdom will also see more than 1,500 electric trucks instead of five, thanks to Amazon's investment.
To service these vehicles, the company plans to organize enough amount of fast chargers at its facilities in Europe. The modern facilities will allow to charge cars in about two hours.
Andy Jassy, Amazon's CEO has previously promised that the company will be carbon-free by 2040. He said the company's logistics is one of the most difficult spheres of the business when it comes to decarbonization. He said that significant and sustained investment in electric vehicles will result in zero carbon emissions by the company.
Amazon has launched 25 "micromobility nodes", or delivery points located close to centers, in highly populated European cities. They allow the company to test different delivery methods, such as bicycle or foot delivery.
Rivian Automotive has already received an order from the retailer to supply 100,000 electric vans.
Rivian plans to provide Amazon’s order by 2025. Plans to apply these vehicles in more than 100 cities by 2030 were also announced by Amazon.
