Amazon and BMW collaborate to create a new cloud platform

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the BMW Group have declared a strategic partnership to develop customized cloud-based software, which can make the distribution and data management of millions of connected vehicles easier. The BMW Group will be the first vehicle manufacturer using the software as the basis for its next-generation cloud-based vehicle data platform. In the future, other vehicle manufacturers will be able to use the new software for easy integration of vehicle data sources and acceleration in the development of new functions.

"Today we have 20 million connected cars on our roads. With the launch of the new generation of BMW vehicles, our AWS—based cloud platform will process approximately three times more vehicle data compared to the current generation of BMW models," said Nicolai Kramer, vice president of vehicle connectivity platforms at the BMW Group. "In collaboration with AWS, we will keep creating innovative solutions that will allow us to develop and deliver new features to customers around the world even faster."

"Data—driven innovation is critical to unlocking the capabilities of next-generation vehicles, especially as the industry seeks to expand the adoption of electric vehicles, new paradigms of digital services and more autonomous vehicle functions," noted Sarah Cooper, general manager of AWS industry products. "Jointly with the BMW Group today, we are creating an infrastructure that will create value for the next generation of cars. Together, we are happy to realize our vision and expand the capabilities of vehicles on the roads."
