Reuters reports that Chilean state-run Codelco is to supply copper concentrate to Kutch Copper in India.
Adani Group's $1.2 billion smelter is located in the Indian state of Gujarat. Kutch Copper started operations a year ago, and began manufacturing wires and cables under the joint venture in March 2025, the news agency says.
According to Codelco, supply will start this year. Meanwhile, executives of Kutch Copper told Reuters that the smelter will receive concentrate from Chile and other countries.
India's copper imports rose since the 2018 closure of the local Sterlite Copper smelter owned by Vedanta. It produced about 400,000 tons of the metal, the news agency reports.
According to Reuters, at the moment only Hindalco Industries, part of the Aditya Birla group, and state-owned Hindustan Copper produce this metal in India. Codelco signed a preliminary agreement with the latter. The companies plan to cooperate in exploring and processing minerals.
