Julia Torreblanca, the leader of the National Society of Mining, Oil and Energy (SNMPE), indicated that this year’s expected copper output will range from 2.79 to 2.85 million tons, up from 2.74 million tons recorded last year.
Torreblanca mentioned that the government is actively working on streamlining the permitting process to enable miners to increase production at a faster pace. Additionally, she noted that Peru is seeking to lessen the effects of the 10% tariffs imposed by Donald Trump on exports to the United States. Should the US apply tariffs on copper imports, Peru may explore alternative markets for its copper products.
Her remarks align with those of Chilean Mining Minister Aurora Williams, who pointed out that countries with lower tariffs, such as Chile and Peru, could become more appealing for trade.
