Romania has started the development of Neptun Deep, the biggest gas field in the Black Sea. The field, owned by Romgaz and OMV Petrom, contains about 100 billion cubic meters of extractable gas.
According to analyst Sorin Elisei, the project will allow the country to double its gas production by 2027 and become a net exporter. However, he warns that growing domestic demand could limit export opportunities. Romania plans to increase consumption by 25 percent by 2030 by building more gas-fired power plants.
After analyzing the situation, experts from the Romanian Energy Center noted the limited export potential of the project. Although it is expected to deliver 4–5 billion cubic meters of gas, these volumes are not enough to have a significant impact on the EU's energy security. Nevertheless, analysts say that every additional billion cubic meters can partially decrease reliance on gas supplies from Russia.
