Slovakia to keep Russian gas supplies until 2027 under EU temporary exemption

Slovakia will continue to receive Russian gas supplies until 2027 thanks to a temporary exemption granted by the European Union in exchange for supporting the sanctions package. The country had previously blocked new restrictions against Russia, citing risks to its energy security. However, Slovakia has now agreed to the new sanctions.

In making the decision, Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico emphasized the need to protect heavy industry from the soaring costs of switching to alternative energy sources. Russian gas accounts for about 40% of Slovakia's energy needs. The fuel is used not only for domestic consumption, but also for transit to other Central European countries.

The EU, seeking unity, has made concessions by securing guarantees of energy supply and allowing the existing contract with Gazprom to remain in force until 2034. However, such a practice, in which one EU member can influence the common course, raises concerns among experts. In their opinion, it weakens the sanctions policy, making it vulnerable.
