Verizon launches new Wi-Fi monitoring technology

Verizon announced a launch of two simple-to-use home technologies: Home Awareness and Device Identification. These home solutions give customers a better view of their home and an extra sense of security – at no extra cost.

With an increasing number of customers trying to maximize their home Wi-Fi networks by connecting additional devices for entertainment, power management and voice-activated smart speakers, and these are just some of them, they can now enjoy new features.

Home Awareness implements WiFi technology for motion detection and reporting any activity in your home through the My Fios app. This technology allows some models of Fios routers to detect failures in existing Wi-Fi signals in the house and notify the user of unexpected movement. Verizon and Origin Wireless will cooperate further to improve the home experience with additional functions based on this Wi-Fi discovery technology.

“We are bringing a technology to market that allows clients to better understand their home without cameras or sensors,” said Pavan Challa, who is a director of product management in the company. "We are happy to cooperate with Origin Wireless on this cutting-edge technology that delivers even greater value to Verizon customers," noted Challa.

When customers use Home Awareness, they can view activity reports in the My Fios app.

Verizon is also a partner of SAM Seamless Network, a company from Verizon Ventures and a leading provider of cloud-based network security and intelligence services, which provides its customers with an additional sense of calm through device identification.

With the help of Device ID, users are able to check their home network for previously unknown devices. Having more visibility into all devices  that have a connection to their home network, customers can manage some of the details of the devices on the network, such as custom naming conventions, allowing for thorough control over their home network and devices connected to it. The device ID is available to all clients on the respective Fios routers.
