Chevron will explore Japan's geothermal energy potential
The Low Carbon Fuel Division of Chevron Corp. merges with subsidiary Mitsui & Co. to explore the potential of geothermal energy in Japan, the company said on Monday.
It is also said that despite the fact that conventional geothermal projects use traditional steam turbines that require the high temperatures often found in geologic-limited concentrations, ACL has the potential to provide access to a wide range of geothermal resources.
The company may also consider using geothermal energy in locations other than Japan.
Geothermal power plants proliferated in Japan after the Fukushima disaster in 2011 because of political support, but they still account for only a small part of the country's energy production.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, geothermal energy could become very important for Japan, which ranks third in the world in terms of its energy reserves.
