The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects that national power consumption will hit record levels in both 2025 and 2026. According to EIA forecasts, electricity demand is expected to rise to 4,205 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) next year and reach 4,252 billion kWh in 2026.
This index increase is partially driven by the expanding number of data centers. Additionally, both US households and businesses are consuming more electricity for heating and transportation needs.
According to the EIA, natural gas’s percentage of electricity generation will decline from 42% in 2024 to 40% in both 2025 and 2026.
The EIA projects US natural gas sales will increase to 13.1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) for residential consumers and 9.7 Bcf/d for commercial consumers this year.
