Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States rose to 35% of Spain's total imports of the fuel in the first four months of this year, official data show. In the same period last year, the figure was 20%. Meanwhile, Russian LNG imports have declined.
From January to April 2025, the European country imported 45,932 gigawatt-hours of gas from the United States, compared to 24,885 gigawatt-hours a year earlier. This was reported by the local gas network operator Enagas. In addition, the organization informed about the decrease of the total demand for this type of fuel in Spain by 3%.
The US has become the main gas supplier to the European country, replacing Algeria, which imports both LNG and pipeline gas to Spain. American cargoes have also made up for the shortfall in Russian supplies. The share of the fuel from Russia in Spain's total gas imports fell to 13.3% in the first four months of this year, compared to 22.4% in the same period last year.
