Ethereum project developers are to launch new testnet for Pectra update

After two questionable tests of Ethereum's upcoming Pectra update, the project's top developers have decided to create a new testnet in order to provide a final demonstration of the code before deployment.

According to Tim Beyko, who coordinates core ecosystem developers at the Ethereum Foundation, the new Hoodi testnet is expected to be launched early next week. Pectra will be tested on Hoodi on Wednesday, March 26, as the blockchain is upgraded to a new version of Ethereum and evaluated for performance and stability.

Pectra includes several code changes designed to make Ethereum faster, more efficient and more convenient for both users and developers. One of the most significant improvements adds smart contracts functionality to the addresses, allowing users' wallets to be customized with new features such as the ability to pay for transactions in currencies other than ETH.

If the test on Hoodi is successful, Beyko expects to launch the update in about 30 days with continued testing. If the plans go as intended, Pectra will become available within the main ecosystem network in late April or early May. This was reported by CoinDesk.
