Panama's Mayor suggests bitcoin payment option for expedited Panama Canal passage

Panama City is exploring innovative ways to enhance shipping efficiency, including a proposal to accept bitcoin payments for expedited vessel transit through the Panama Canal, Coinotag reports.

This initiative was suggested by the city Mayor Mayer Mizrachi. The proposal aims to strengthen the country's position as a leader in cryptocurrency adoption for maritime trade by offering additional incentives for digital asset usage. According to Mizrachi, this measure will streamline operational processes and attract more vessels to the canal.

The Mayor’s initiative presents substantial fiscal implications. With the canal’s $5 billion annual revenue from 10,000 transits (423M tons of cargo), bitcoin adoption could enhance profitability and solidify Panama’s leadership in cryptocurrency integration for maritime commerce, Coinotag notes.

However, many citizens are skeptical of bitcoin due to regulatory uncertainties and prevalent fears surrounding the technology.
