Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada and the US plan to sign a trade deal within the next month. US President Donald Trump stated that an agreement could be reached in the coming weeks, despite lingering disagreements. He directed his team to secure the most favorable terms possible for the American side.
While Trump sees tariffs as a simple regulatory tool, Carney is pushing for lower duties on Canada's strategically vital industries—steel, aluminum, and automotive manufacturing. Still, the American president showed some willingness to address Canadian concerns.
According to a statement released by Carney's office, the two leaders also discussed issues concerning critical minerals, border security, and defense cooperation.
Canada's Ambassador to the US, Kirsten Hillman, reaffirmed Carney's unwavering stance that all new tariffs against Canada must be completely eliminated as part of the trade deal. However, Hillman described the negotiations as constructive and expressed hope for rapid progress in the talks.
