Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the government may look into constructing a new pipeline to ramp up global energy supplies. However, moving forward with this plan would require major investments in environmental programs to mitigate ecological risks.
Decarbonizing Canada's oil industry is entirely in the nation's best interest, the official stressed. Carney added that a new pipeline would diversify markets and reduce reliance on the United States, which currently imports roughly 4 million barrels of Canadian crude per day.
The Prime Minister made his case during talks with provincial leaders, gaining support for developing western and northern trade corridors.
The provincial premiers also put forward several infrastructure projects, seeking fast-tracked federal approval. Carney framed the meeting as a first step in reducing Canada's economic ties to the United States by strengthening the domestic economy.
