Scheduled deliveries of crude to the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve will not be completed until year-end as the site is now under maintenance, says the Department of Energy.
Former President Joe Biden’s administration planned to replenish strategic reserves by 15.8 million barrels in the period from January to May this year. At the moment, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve has received only 8.8 million barrels. Delivery was rescheduled through December 2025 due to maintenance at the facility, an Energy Department representative told Reuters.
US President Donald Trump’s tax-and-spending bill includes about $1.5 billion for maintaining the reserve and purchasing crude.
In 2022, Biden held several sales of oil from the strategic reserve in an attempt to curb rising gasoline prices. Refilling it to pre-sale levels would cost $20 billion and take several years, according to Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
