Germany to issue record 539 billion euros in federal debt next year

Germany’s federal government is planning to issue a record amount of debt in 2023. These measures are aimed at providing financial support to households and companies affected by the energy crisis.

Germany is on track to hit 539 billion euros ($573 billion) in debt issuance next year, based on a plan from the German finance agency released Wednesday. This figure exceeds a high of 449 billion euros in 2022. The previous record dates back to 2021. In that period, the government issued 483 billion euros worth of debt to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Next year, borrowing is expected to hit 274 billion euros in federal bonds and 242 billion euros to be traded on the money market. The agency also intends to issue inflation-related bonds amounting to 8 billion euros, along with the green ones, worth up to 17 billion euros.
