More than 40,000 Model S and Model X cars of the American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla produced between 2017 and 2021 are now being recalled by the company due to a possible loss of power steering assist, which might happen in case of driving on rough roads or hitting potholes.
According to Reuters, Tesla released an OTA update of its software aimed at system recalibrating after it started delivering an update with enhanced capability of detecting sudden steering assist torque. The company has started the update release since October 11.
A possible loss of power steering assist implies that more steering effort is needed, and this is especially true at low speed, which might result in a higher risk of road accidents.
As it was stated by Tesla, there were about 314 alerts for this condition registered among the U.S. cars produced by the company, which might be connected to recalling. At the same time, though, the company noted that they have no information on any lethal accidents or injuries caused by this condition.
Tesla’s representatives also emphasized that an update which deals with the issue had already been installed on more than 97% of the recalled cars by November 1.
In total, the American electric vehicle manufacturer has recalled 3.4 million vehicles in 17 campaigns this year.
