US 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum imports will remain in place until US domestic production is strengthened. Similar measures will also apply to copper, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated.
He also announced his willingness to hold a meeting with Ontario Premier Doug Ford after the latter takes office. They will discuss trade relations between the two countries.
According to Lutnick, steel and aluminum are among essential products that must be produced in the US for national security reasons. The same goes for copper. In late February, President Donald Trump ordered the Commerce Secretary to assess the feasibility of imposing tariffs on copper imports.
