Canada's Ivanhoe Mines has suspended underground operations at its Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following renewed seismic activity. Mine personnel were evacuated on Sunday, though the project continues partial operations using copper ore from stockpiles, according to Mining Weekly.
The emergency suspension has also forced Ivanhoe Mines to withdraw its previous forecast for 2025 production and costs. The figures will be revised depending on the further course of events, experts report.
According to yesterday's statement by Ivanhoe Mines CEO Marna Cloete, the company is redirecting all efforts to maintain pumping and water management infrastructure at Kamoa-Kakula by accelerating the procurement of necessary equipment. Mining Weekly adds that the company is also investigating the cause of the increased seismic activity and exploring solutions to address the challenges.
