According to Reuters, Canada exported its first-ever cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Pacific Coast to Asia on Monday. The milestone was announced by a representative of LNG Canada, a joint venture with Shell.
The loading took place at a new plant in British Columbia, with the Gaslog Glasgow tanker departing for Asia. A week earlier, the agency reported that the facility, Canada's first large-scale commercial LNG production plant, had begun successful operations. Exports are expected to reach 14 million tons of LNG per year.
Reuters analysts note this move reflects Canada's intention to diversify its transport routes. Although Canada is the world's fifth-largest natural gas producer and fourth-largest exporter, it has historically supplied most of its volume to the United States. This new access to energy-intensive Asian markets marks a significant step forward for Canadian producers.
