Republicans failed to win a majority of seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. They were just one seat short of winning the House of Representatives. After President Joe Biden's Democrats continue control of the Senate, there will be a two-year split in government because of the midterm victory.
The final result is not known yet. Thousands of votes are still being counted in several states, including California. Edison Research forecasts show that Democrats won 209 seats and Republicans won 217. For a majority, it would require 218 seats.
On November 8, Republicans were predicting a "red wave" of growth. Their expectations heavily fall behind a victory with a small advantage.
A split in Congress would have the effect of limiting Biden's power in Washington and making it difficult to advance his initiatives.
