Most Americans believe the import tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump will likely drive up inflation in the short term while slowing the US economy, a CBS News survey reveals.
The share of respondents who say Trump’s trade policies are hurting them financially has risen from 42% to 49% as of April. Meanwhile, 42% of those surveyed project a weakening US economy. Still, 34% of Americans expect tariffs to have a positive impact, according to the news service.
Meanwhile, 75% of respondents in the CBS News poll believe the fresh duties will drive up consumer prices in the US in the short term, while 48% expect a long-term effect. At the same time, most Americans believe Trump is using the tariffs for negotiations and is likely to revoke them afterward.
