Over the next five years, Amazon.com Inc. is investing more than 1 billion euros ($974.8 million) in electric trucks and vans and placing smart lockers across Europe to deliver goods that produce low emissions. With such measures, the company is accelerating its commitment to achieving zero-carbon emissions, which is scheduled for 2040.
Representatives of the retailer also said that part of the investment is to encourage the development of innovations in the transportation industry and the creation of a stronger public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs). Such a contribution would help more than triple Europe's electric van fleet, from 3,000 vehicles to more than 10,000 by 2025.
The company said it hopes to acquire more than 1,500 electric-powered trucks used to deliver goods from its main distribution warehouse to regional distribution centers or parcel delivery centers in the coming years.
