Amazon.com Inc. has taken the decision to shut down a virtual tour feature called "Amazon Explore" that was launched during the pandemic. This is the latest belt-tightening move by the online sales giant as it struggles to adapt to declining sales.
According to a statement made by Amazon on Wednesday, the company is always open to experiments and is testing products similar to Amazon Explore. "During the process of phasing out this program, the company will continue to innovate and invest in finding new solutions to continue to please our customers. We are also providing support to our employees affected during this transition and identifying new opportunities at Amazon."
The Amazon Explore virtual tour was launched during the pandemic in 2020. For example, a 50-minute excursion to an animal shelter in Costa Rica could cost a user $7.50, and for a 1-hour virtual walk through the markets of Venice, a user could pay $50.
In order to reduce its costs, Amazon has decided to curtail experimental programs. Among the company's developments that have been canceled or reduced are products such as Scout autonomous delivery robot and Amazon Glow video calling gadget for children. In addition, the company has abandoned Amazon Care, its own telehealth project, and put on hold hiring corporate retail teams.
