An increase in the number of small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in trading activity on Amazon’s selling platform in Great Britain has been registered this year. The noted growth of more than 25% in this country has a faster pace than the growth in other European countries such as Germany, France, and Italy.
According to a statement made by Amazon.com Inc, one of the most influential e-commerce companies of the world, there are currently about 85 000 small businesses in Great Britain which provide their products via the company’s platform. More than 950 million sales can be attributed to said businesses, which alternatively might be represented as 1750 product sales in a minute. In addition, more than 700 of those businesses demonstrate sales volumes which are higher than £1 million, or $1.1 million.
After Amazon was subjected to close supervision in relation to antitrust laws, the company has begun presenting itself as a protector of small business and provider of new jobs. Launching online courses on effective use of the selling platform for merchants were among the activities held by the company in that direction. This summer, an investigation into Amazon has been initiated by Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Similar investigations were launched before in the EU and the United States. The probe initiated by the CMA concerns Amazon’s retail and reselling business and possible breaches of competition laws. According to the CMA statement, an initial stage of collecting the necessary information ends in September.
As it was stated by Amazon, some European countries have more fast-developing markets than the UK. There are the Netherlands, Sweden, Poland among the countries mentioned by the company, although their bases were actually lower.
