The European Union is set to reopen talks with the United States on increasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, in order to prevent the reintroduction of Donald Trump's tariffs. This information comes from Politico, citing sources within the EU.
Brussels is considering boosting LNG demand by cooperating on collective purchases, which would enable the US to place bigger orders. Despite the recent market downturn, the EU remains optimistic about a more productive dialogue after Washington previously rejected such proposals.
A major hurdle remains the high cost of American gas. The EU is concerned that rushing into agreements while tariffs are suspended could lead to higher prices. In addition, there is uncertainty about the effectiveness of a collective purchasing strategy similar to the one implemented in 2022.
On April 9, Donald Trump suspended tariffs for 75 countries for 90 days following his announcement last week that duties would be imposed on imports from 185 nations. Politico notes that the EU intends to use this period to clinch a favorable energy deal.
