Netflix has announced it is building its first video game studio in Helsinki, Finland, thus expanding its own empire with mobile games.
This statement came after a challenging year for Netflix, when the streaming giant lost many subscribers for the first time in a decade, and their outflow continues. Concurrently, the company's stock price fell more than 60 percent amid a market decline this year.
On top of acquiring Next Games, Netflix had previously obtained Night School Studio and Boss Fight Entertainment. Each studio has "various strengths, along with business lines." So, this cooperation would help to develop a wide range of games for the firm’s users.
That said, games from the streaming service have been around for more than a year. At the moment, their number has reached 32. Total downloads, in turn, exceed 30 million worldwide, an analytical company Apptopia noted.
Netflix games are available on mobile devices, including Android phones and tablets, as well as iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. These apps, however, can’t be downloaded on other consoles.
Over the past month, almost 1.63 million people have been playing Netflix on a daily basis, according to Apptopia. That figure represents only a fraction of the company's paid subscribers, which analysts estimate to be more than 220 million.
