Google announced it would accept crypto payments for cloud services via integration with Coinbase. Some customers will now be able to make crypto-based payments with Bitcoin, Ether, and Dogecoin.
As noted by Google Cloud Vice President and General Manager Amit Zavery, the company will utilize Coinbase commerce — an online platform for merchants — and this feature will be available only for some customers starting in 2023. Nowadays, it supports only 10 currencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin.
This will result in Coinbase moving some of its data-related applications from Amazon Web Services to Google Cloud. Google is also looking into Coinbase Prime, a solution that provides secure custody.
Terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said in a statement that their team wanted to make building in Web3 faster and easier and this deal would allow them to achieve this goal.
It’s a well-known fact that Google wants to experiment with crypto and Web3. Alphabet, Google's parent company, is considered a backer of blockchain companies, with $1.5 billion invested into different crypto startups.
