On Thursday, face recognition became available once again on Google's Pixel phones, despite issues with rising costs and falling device performance. This was announced by the Alphabet’s former employees.
The system's return came after Google introduced stricter rules regarding face recognition products. These actions were taken amid questions about their effectiveness on darker skin. As the source noted, it took time for the company to rethink its approach to testing the system. The feature first appeared in the previous Pixel’s version, hitting the market in 2019.
Face recognition on the new smartphones takes place with the front camera. However, unlike earlier versions, the system won’t allow customers to unlock certain applications and make payments. The reason is considered a growth of spoofing, in particular with the users’ photos. Thus, the probability of fraud has reached 20%, exceeding Google's target of 7%.
In fact, low light and wearing sunglasses can also cause problems with face recognition, the company reports. So, smartphone unlocking by fingerprint remains a good alternative.
