Peak of COVID cases in China will last for two-three months

According to a recent statement made by a Chinese epidemiologist, the peak incidence of COVID-19 cases is projected to last for two or three months. It’s also expected that the wave of the infection will subsequently spread over the country’s large countryside areas, which have a relatively limited supply of medical resources.

As it was said by the specialist, a rapid increase in the number of COVID cases will likely be registered in the countryside after the first days of the Lunar New Year holidays, when hundreds of millions will head to their hometowns. The holidays will officially start on January 21, and they were earlier characterized by the largest annual migration of people in the world in the pre-pandemic period.

At the same time, it was noted that certain parts of China were going back to regular life. Thus, inhabitants of larger cities started to move more, and this fact indicates a gradual growth of consumption and economic activity in 2023. Nevertheless, some indicators, including traffic data, haven’t yet risen to the levels registered just several months ago. Experts in economics remain cautious in relation to the pace of reviving after the reopening, which happened faster than it was initially expected.
