According to the US Department of Labor, 821 initial claims for unemployment benefits were submitted nationwide by federal employees for the week ended March 15. By comparison, the previous week's number was 1,066.
As Bloomberg clarifies, the data may be revised before publication in the weekly jobless claims report on March 27.
For the week ended March 8, the number of US federal workers' continuing claims rose to 9,135. This is up from the previous week's figure of 8,648 and also represents an increase of nearly 2,900 from a year ago.
Since Donald Trump took office as President of the United States, tens of thousands of jobs in the country's government bodies have been eliminated, and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency has started cutting federal employees.
Claims filed by unemployed federal workers are treated separately from other workers' applications. According to data released earlier on Thursday by the Labor Department, the total number of jobless claims in the US was little changed last week and remained at a relatively low level.
